On the footsteps of the Italian Alps lies Bergamo. This beautiful city is divided into Città Alta (higher city) and Città Bassa (lower city). The best tip we can give you is to head up to Città Alta as soon as possible, as it is majestic. Climb the stairs or grab the funicular to get behind the city walls, a medieval atmosphere awaits with amazing restaurants, beautiful churches, and even better views of the plains below. Here are 5 must-sees in Bergamo!
1. View from Venetian city walls
These gigantic, 6-kilometer-long, city walls are an absolute highlight of Bergamo. The Republic of Venice built the walls in the 16th century. However, the city has not been under siege ever since, which explains how the beautiful walls have remained intact. Come here for a romantic sunset stroll, with the most beautiful views!
2. Visit the beautiful Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore
This might be our favorite church in Northern Italy, and the story about its foundation is just as majestic. Around 1100, a devastating plague broke out in Europe, which had people dying left and right. The inhabitants of Bergamo asked the Virgin Mary to protect them, and in return, they would build the most beautiful church. The plague spared Bergamo, and the inhabitants held their word. The result is a beautiful Basilica devoted to the Virgin Mary, with an impressive facade and many beautiful frescos.
3. Wander around the steep backstreets
Although Bergamo’s main streets are full of people, shops, and restaurants, the windy backstreets are almost empty. Find yourself a good viewpoint somewhere in Citta Alta, or even grab the second funicular up to San Viglio castle. This protective fortress has an amazing panoramic view, which was able to protect the city for many centuries.
4. Climb to La Rocca Musuem
La Rocca is an old fortress hosting the History Museum of Bergamo, which is surely worth a visit. A steep walk will lead you to it, and, of course, there is also a good view waiting for you!
5. Piazza Vecchia
The Piazza Vecchia is the heart of Bergamo. You will definitely stumble across this beautiful square, with a lot of outdoor seating, music, and stunning architecture. A good traditional restaurant on this square is Caffè del Tasso, with simple but delicious food and drinks.
Bonus: Tempietto di Santa Croce
Many people do not know about this small chapel, but it is older than all other churches around it. The Tempietto was built in the 11th century in a traditional Roman style but was later decorated from the inside with beautiful frescos. Do not miss out!
