A beautiful German gate in Metz

Located in the heart of the Lorraine, Metz has everything a tourist can wish for. A beautiful river surrounding the city, picturesque medieval streets, a magnificent cathedral, and endless shops and restaurants. Still, it is often overlooked as a popular tourist destination, making this French city unique! Here are 10 things to do in Metz, France. (Just staying in Metz one day? 1. Cathedral of Metz – The Most Beautiful You’ll See

This 14th-century Cathedral is one of the most special ones in the world. Next to its enormous size (with the ceiling reaching over 40 meters), it is famous for its beautiful stained glass windows. These windows provided the church with the name, the Lantern of God, and as soon as you step foot inside, you will understand why.

2. Porte des Allemands

Unfortunately, this is the only leftover medieval city gate in Metz. It is, however, so very impressive by itself, and it does well to show the significance of the city in the Middle Ages. Built in the 13th century, it is now a must-visit when visiting Metz.

3. Place Saint Louis

This square summarises Metz perfectly. Small, medieval, and very beautiful. Come here for a drink at night together with the locals, or watch the everyday life going by in the day.

4. Saint Pierre aux Nonnains (4th Century)

Although it is not one of the main attractions of the city, the Basilica of Saint Pierre aux Nonnains might be the most special one. Originally constructed in the 4th(!) century as a bathing place, it is the oldest building in Metz. Later, it served as an abbey, as a part of the defense structures, and as the church that it is now. It is located in La Quartier de la Citadelle, which is full of other monuments, like l’Arsenal, the Chappelle des Templiers, and L’esplanade Gardens, so take some time to stroll through this magical place.

5. Museum day: Centre Pompidou and Musee de la Cour d’Or

You might know the Centre Pompidou in Paris, one of the most famous museums in the world. This special branch of the museum also specializes in contemporary and modern art, and it is recognized for its extraordinary architecture.

Musee the la Cour d’Or is the history museum of Metz and hosts many beautiful architectural discoveries from Metz and its surroundings. The museum itself is located in an old monastery, which already makes it worth a visit!

6. Fine Dining in Le P’tit Frontalier

Like any other French city, food is everywhere in Metz. We had an amazing dining experience at Le P’tit Frontalier. The small restaurant is centrally located and offers a delectable range of local food and wines.

7. The Neo-Roman Metz-Ville Train Station

During the occupation of Metz by the Germans between 1871 and WWI, Metz became a flourishing industrial capital that played a central role in the coal mining in the area. To transport all this coal, a big train station was necessary. The Germans went all out and built the beautiful, neo-roman style train station which is still standing today.

8. Temple Neuf for the Best Photos in Metz

The most iconic spot for pictures of Metz is Temple Neuf without a doubt. The protestant church was also built during the German occupation, in the same style as the train station. The church is situated on an idyllic island in the Moselle River and was built in just three years (now that’s German engineering!).

9.  L’esplanade Gardens

These gardens on the edge of the city are the perfect spot for some relaxation. They are bordered by many monuments, like the Arsenal, The Palace of Justice, and Saint Pierre aux Nonnains, so check it out!
