The Best Hikes Around Granada (easily accesible by bus)

Although Granada is mostly known for its unique city center, it has a lot more to offer. The beautiful rough mountainous surroundings make it the perfect base for some beautiful hikes through the Spanish countryside. In this blog, you will find the 5 best hikes around Granada.

1. Ruta de los Cahorros at Monachil

After an easy bus ride to Monachil (Bus 0183), you will find yourself in a gorgeous valley. Small bridges will guide you past waterfalls and chasms before you end up in the hills high above Granada: the view is amazing.

2. Quentár and its lake

Quenár is a cute village only 30 minutes away from Granada by bus. Come here during the morning and walk through the beautiful fields towards the Embalse de Quentár, a big lake separated by an impressive dam. Keep your eyes open because you might see some mountain goats on the way! Don’t forget to get a typical Spanish lunch for a small price before returning to Granada.

P.S. There is also a good hostel in this town. So if you want to stay the night and meet some other adventure-seekers, do not miss out on the Fundalucia Guesthouse!

3. Walk along the Genil River to Guëjar Sierra

Whether you start this hike in Granada or take a bus and start somewhere else on the Genil River, this hike is totally worth it. Just follow the river until you get to a big lake called Embalse de Canales. Then make your way to Guëjar Sierra, a cute village with good views located high above the lake. Get a drink on the rooftop of Restaurante Las Olivilllas, or a typical meal in the tiny center.

4. Walk to the Abadia de Sacromonte

The Abadia de Sacromonte is undoubtedly one of Granada’s main highlights. The hike to it takes about 40 minutes and takes you past many small flamenco bars on a small winding road. The Abadia itself is full of history and therefore surely worth a visit. Next to this the views from up here onto the city and the Alhambra are unbelievable (get there at sunset!).

5. Get beyond the Alhambra

What many people don’t know, is that there is a whole park behind the Alhambra for everyone to discover called Dehesa de Generalife. This unknown green haven is the perfect escape after a long time in the city, and the hikes here are beautiful. Go up a steep path behind the Paseo de Los Tristes, and then walk your way through this magic park at the edge of Granada!
