Deventer is not one of the best-known Dutch cities. However, it is one of its oldest and most beautiful, and therefore certainly worth a visit. This old town is located on the majestic river Ijssel and was one of the strongholds of the Hanseatic league, a transnational nordic trade union in the 14th century. Here are 10 must-sees in this charming hidden gem in the East of The Netherlands!
1. De Walstraat
Like in New York, de Walstraat is Deventer’s most awe-inspiring street. No skyscrapers here though, just small boutique shops and old houses. Don’t forget to check out the old women’s prison on this picturesque street, which now hosts a nice café, a jewelry shop, and the Charles Dickens Kabinet.
2. Market on De Brink
Surprisingly, De Brink is the biggest square in The Netherlands. This, again, dates back to the times of the Hanseatic League. In the 14th and 15th centuries, De Brink in Deventer hosted 5 huge markets per year, in which most North-Western European traders came to Deventer for two weeks to sell their goods. Centrally located on De Brink lies De Waag (1528), where traders would weigh their goods and determine the right price was determined.
There is still a market every morning between Tuesday and Saturday, to get all your necessary goods!
3. Beer with the locals at Café Persee
Just like many other bars, Café Persee is located on the Brink. After a day of walking, this is the perfect place for a good, Dutch, fried snack with some locally brewed craft beer.
4. Bergkwartier
The Bergkwartier is Deventer’s cutest neighborhood. Come here and explore the art galleries, restaurants, and beautiful alleys that it has to offer. Check out the Portuguese/French Chez Antoinette for a romantic dinner.
5. Brunch at Parkcafé Mees
Located on one of the islands of Deventer’s old defense works lies Parkcafé Mees. This hidden tea house is run with love and a place that you cannot miss out on!
6. Oldest Stone Building in The Netherlands
Another highlight that you have to tick off your list is the oldest stone house in The Netherlands. It is right in the center, and people still live here. It was built around 1130 and has a glass canopy protecting it from the weather.
7. Lebuinus Church
The medieval Lebuinus Church towers over Deventer and is one of the most beautiful landmarks of the city. For an amazing view of the town and its surroundings, we recommend climbing up the tower for 3 euros!
8. The Hidden Church
Of course, an enormous church like the Lebuinus is cool to see, but we prefer the undiscovered, small ones! Behind the beautiful facades of Het Penninckshuis on De Brink lies a tiny hidden church. It has been used as a secret church for Catholics in a Protestant Netherlands in the past, but from the late 19th century onwards, it has been in use as a remonstrant Church. You can access it for free by going through the tourist office of Deventeree (VVV), which is also located in Hett Penninkshuis.
9. Take a ferry for the best view!
For the best view of the city, take a ferry across the river and admire the lovely skyline of Deventer!
10. Contemporary Art at EICAS Musuem
Deventer also hosts a beautiful museum for contemporary art. Next to their amazing collection, the EICAS hosts good yearly exhibitions with the best European artists of the contemporary times.
