Burg Eltz is a castle in Germany that is a must-visit when traveling through the Eifel Region. The castle was built in the 12th century and kept developing for the following 500 years. Therefore it is incomparable with other, more known German castles like Neuschwanstein, built in the late 19th century. What makes Burg Eltz truly special is that since it was first built, it has remained in the same Eltz family (850 years).
What Do You Need To Know When Visiting Burg Eltz?
Bring cash! The parking will cost you 4 euros, and you will not be let in if you do not have this in cash. Next to this, wear your most beautiful outfit, because you will want to have a picture taken of yourself and this magnificent castle. Ultimately, you can only visit the inside of the castle on a guided tour. Do not be shy to wait for a little while, it is worth it.
Why is Burg Eltz So Beautiful?
The castle is so beautiful because it has remained (almost) intact for 900 years. This is unique since castles, typically built as defense structures, often face sieges. Due to the diplomatic wisdom and the aim for peace, the lords of Eltz have gotten their castle out of most main conflicts over the years. Only during the Eltz Feud in the 14th century (1331-1336), the Bishop of Trier besieged Burg Eltz, overthrowing the lords and destroying the main fortifications.
When To Visit?
Burg Eltz is open to visit between April and November from 9:30 to 17:30. It is ideal to get there early in the morning, to avoid crowds.
