In the Southern Dutch city of Maastricht -on the Belgian border and just 30 minutes away from Germany- one might not feel like being in The Netherlands. The hidden gem does not have traditional canals like all the others, but one huge river flowing through and separating the city in two: the Meuse (Maas).
Maastricht is well-known for its treaty back in 1991 when the European Union was founded, but there is way more to see here! In this blog, we take you through the best activities to do in this magical city.

Top 5 activities in Maastricht
1. Stroll over the ancient St Servatius Bridge
Built by the Romans in 57 AD, the St Servatius Bridge is the oldest bridge in The Netherlands. The beautiful arches connect the old center with the beautiful neighborhood Wyck and have therefore always been of uttermost importance to the city itself. Often filled with street musicians, walking over this bridge is a memorable experience. Enjoy the views!
2. The stunning squares + farmer’s market
Maastricht hosts three big squares, all filled with terraces where you can have a nice drink after a long day of walking.
Vrijthof
The Vrijthof is probably the most famous square in The Netherlands, with the iconic view of the Catholic St Servatius Basilic and the red tower of the reformed Sint Jans Church, located next to each other like true brothers. In summer, this square transforms into André Rieu’s playground, the famous musician performs here every weekend for over a month.
Markt
As its name already says, this square hosts a big farmers market on Wednesdays and Fridays, so do not miss out! Otherwise admire the beautiful 17th-century city hall, which has a central spot in this square.
Onze Lieve Vrouweplein
As the smallest of the three, this square is a bit more hidden within the historic center. It is, however, our personal favorite. Sit down at one of the terraces (they occupy the whole square) and watch people with a drink in your hand. Also, visit the Basilic towering over the square. Built from 1254 onwards, it is a significant landmark in Maastricht’s long history.
3. Go shopping in the old city center of Maastricht
As the provincial capital, masses of people come to Maastricht to do their shopping. All the big chains have a place in the center, but in the smaller, windy streets of the historic district, you will find many more, smaller boutique stores with products of the highest quality.
4. Visit Hell’s Gate (Helpoort) and climb the city wall
The Helpoort is the oldest city gate still standing in The Netherlands. This beautiful gate was constructed in the early 13th century and now functions as the defense-works museum of Maastricht (Vestingmuseum). If you are into history, it is worth to pay a visit.
5. Tour the Saint Peter fortress, and explore the caves below
This fortress (Sint Pieter in Dutch), is located on the highest point in Maastricht and therefore has a beautiful view over the city. Explore the 17th-century defense structure, but do not forget to book a tour through the unique, man-dug caves below. Afterward, have a drink in one of the two bars on top of the hill, and watch hot-air balloons go up with a clear sunset.
