Visiting Metz in One Day: Ultimate Itinerary

Beautiful cityscape of Metz

Nestled in the heart of Lorraine, Metz offers everything you could wish for as a day trip destination. With its beautiful river encircling the city, enchanting medieval streets, a magnificent cathedral, and a vibrant array of shops and restaurants, Metz is a treasure waiting to be discovered. Often overlooked by tourists, this French city offers a unique and authentic experience. Here’s how to make the most of one day in Metz. If you have more time, find our blog post on Metz here!

Start your day off with a good brunch

Metz is full of cute coffee bars and brunch places. Walk around town in the morning and find yourself one! Our favorite was Café P’tit Dessert, a local treasure with the most amazing brunch options, sweets, and coffees. Get there on time, it fills up fast.

Explore the beautiful sites on your morning walk!

Metz’s historical center is full of amazing sites. Its Cathedral is known as one of the most beautiful ones in France because of its stunning stained glass. Continue your walk towards Place Saint Louis, a cute square full of local bars. Afterward, go to the last remaining city gate, Porte Des Allemands. This impressive structure defended the city for centuries, and you can see why!

Walking back through the winding city streets towards the Esplanade Gardens, you will find Metz’s best-hidden gem: the Basilica of Saint Pierre Aux Nonnains. This church was built in the 4th (!) century. It has had multiple services over the years, but now it is a church that sometimes opens up for visits, a must-see.

For the best pictures of Metz, head to the Pont Moyen. Here you have a beautiful view of the Mosel river, with the iconic Temple Neuf church in the background.

An afternoon full of culture

Metz is home to a branch of the famous Centre Pompidou Museum. The museum hosts some of Europe’s best contemporary art pieces and is renowned for its extraordinary architecture.

If you want to learn more about the history of Metz, the Musée de La Cour D’Or is the place to be. It was founded in 1839, and located in an old monastery. You will find interesting architectural pieces and amazing stories about the history of Metz and its surroundings. There are even some intact Gallo-Roman baths!

Aperitif at Place Saint Louis

After a full day exploring Metz, a drink is very welcome. Saint Louis Square is where locals gather to have a drink after a long work day or to lounge on the weekends. Have an aperitif and watch the everyday life going by!

Fine dining at Le P’tit Frontalier

Like many other French cities, Metz is known for its culinary hotspots. There are many good restaurants in this city, but our favorite was Le P’tit Frontalier. This small restaurant offers local food and wines, but everything is of the most amazing quality. A culinary delight!
