5 Best Attractions In The Cultural Capital of Córdoba

Although tourists often forget about Córdoba and rather visit its bigger brothers Sevilla, Málaga, and Granada, it is undoubtedly one of Spain’s most beautiful cities. The mix of religions that has created this gorgeous city makes it unique, the perfect trip for a culture lover!

1. Visit the Mezquita

This Mosque-Church is one of the world’s most unique landmarks. The blend of religions and architectural styles makes it incredibly beautiful and special. Originally built as a mosque in the 8th century and extended in the following centuries to the second-biggest Mosque in the world (only after Mecca), the Mezquita was converted to a Cathedral after the so-called Reconquista (or Christian recapture) of Spain. It truly is a once-in-a-lifetime experience to walk through the Morish arches in this beautiful Cathedral, and therefore a must-see when visiting Córdoba.

2. Browse around the historic city center

Whether you are interested in art galleries, a drink on a terrace, beautiful architecture, or a traditional Spanish tapa, the city center of Córdoba has it all. Walk around and you will find many charming shops, restaurants and much more. Don’t forget to get a traditional tortilla at Bar Santos (you will see the queue) and get a drink with the locals at Plaza de la Corredera, where you can sit back, relax, and let the day pass by slowly. 

3. Discover the beautiful alleys of the Jewish Quarter (Juderia)

Wandering through the Jewish Quarter is like traveling back to the Middle Ages. The Juderia originated during the Morish rule of over a thousand years ago when the Islamic and Jewish inhabitants of Córdoba lived together in harmony. Get lost in the beautiful little alleys and squares, and don’t forget to visit the old synagogue. 

4. Walk over the Roman Bridge

Originally constructed by the Romans in the 1st century BC, this stunning bridge will be one the most beautiful you have ever seen. The southern end is protected by the Torre de la Calahorra, a fortified tower built during the Islamic rule. Nowadays, the tower houses a small museum that is definitely worth visiting and has a beautiful view over the city. 

Fun fact: the Roman Bridge is also depicted as the ‘Long Bridge of Volantis’ in the famous TV series Game of Thrones. 

5. Visit the  Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos

This special palace with its magnificent gardens is a must-visit in Córdoba. It 

was constructed after the Christians recaptured the city, but still has many hosts many Islamic influences as a consequence of the Mudéjar style that was used. Do not forget to wander around the beautiful gardens, that are not any less than the palace itself.
