As the holiday season draws closer, we’ve been seeing Christmas Markets pop up in all of Europe’s major cities. This year, we are highlighting some of our favorites!
Strasbourg, France
What better place to start than with one of the oldest Christmas markets in Europe? Strasbourg is a magical city any time of the year, but during the holidays it transforms into something completely unique. Known as the “Capital of Christmas,” every street and building becomes decked out with lights, red ribbons, and wreaths. There are several different markets throughout the city totalling more than 300 stalls! We recommend starting at Place Kléber to see the giant Christmas tree before grabbing some food from the different vendors. Don’t miss the Notre Dame Cathedral, which is even more impressive after dark due to the angel lights strung along Rue Merciere.

Ghent, Belgium
Ghent’s Christmas market runs from December 7-December 31 and is located in the city center, from Sint-Baafsplein to the end of the Korenmarkt. With more than 150 vendors, there is plenty to do, eat, and buy!
After wandering through the wooden huts and stocking up on some holiday gifts, warm up at the Castle of the Counts. Here you can find a winter bar, which serves small plates and a variety of drinks. This castle experience will definitely put you in the holiday spirit!
Maastricht, Netherlands
Considering how amazing Maastricht’s regular Wednesday market is, I had high expectations for the Christmas market. Located in the Vrijthof Square, the combination of activities like the skating rink and ferris wheel plus live music makes this market the perfect way to spend a winter afternoon. It is also located only a short walk away from some of the best shopping in the area, so be sure to check out some of the stores before you go. Grab a cup of hot chocolate and an oliebol (a ball of deep-fried dough) and enjoy!

Antwerp, Belgium
The Antwerp Christmas market spans over a few of the historic squares in the city center, and the beautiful architecture provides the perfect backdrop for your holiday shopping and dining. You can spend the day visiting the 90 food and gift vendors, skating around the brand new ice rink, playing a round of mini golf, and finishing it all off with a warm Belgian waffle. Don’t forget to stop for a kiss under the massive mistletoe on your way out!
This list highlights a few of the many Christmas markets across Europe. A visit to Strasbourg, Ghent, Maastricht, or Antwerp is sure to put you in the holiday spirit, and it is a great way to spend time with friends or family this season.
