Madrid might not be the most touristy destination in Spain, but it surprises its tourists over and over. If you are visiting for a long weekend, here are 10 things to do in this vibrant capital!
1. Explore Madrileño life in La Latina
Still a secret to most tourists, La Latina neighborhood was our favorite part of Madrid. Narrow, windy streets take you to cute squares full of locals enjoying their drinks and tapas. The main street known for its busy bars is Calle de la Cava Baja, while you will find more peace in the squares of Plaza Pajo and Plaza Carros.
2. Start your day with a good brunch in Malasaña
Everything in Malasaña is hip, and so are the brunch spots. Treat yourself to a brunch menu at Brunch Club, or start your day off well at the popping Zenith Brunch & Cocktails. Next to this, there are many hip restaurants and tapas bars (check out Malpica) in this neighborhood, so don’t miss out!
3. Escape the city in El Retiro Park
El Retiro Park is just perfect if you want to escape the city for a few hours. It is surrounded by some beautiful city gates, including the famous Puerta de Alcalá. The park itself is green, big, and well-maintained. Some beautiful spots within are the Palacio de Cristal, the Casita del Pescador, and the central lake with its monument of Alfonso XII in the background.
4. Go to one of the many squares filled with locals
Just like any other Spanish city, there are a tremendous amount of squares in Madrid. For a step into the lives of the locals, go to one of them, grab a drink, and talk the day away. Some of our personal favorites were Plaza de Santa Ana, Plaza Pajo, and Plaza Pedro Zerolo.
5. Watch the sunset at Palacio Royal
Join all the other tourists here in the square between Palacio Royal and the Cathedral, because this attraction is totally worth it. Views on the surrounding mountains and the beautiful palace are stunning, so get there on time and don’t miss the sunset!
6. Check out the bars in Chueca
This neighborhood was one of the first gay-tolerant places in Madrid and is now full of bars, cafés and galleries. Come here at night for the most inclusive cocktail bars and going out venues after a long day in the city.
7. See the sites in the rich city center
The proud city center of Madrid is full of main attractions, our favorite tourist sites were Plaza Mayor, the market of San Miguel, and the overwhelming Prado museum. Watch out for pickpockets!
8. Get tapas in the vibrant street Calle de Barcelona
Calle de Barcelona is your perfect spot to start a night out. It is centrally located, with many ‘discotecas’ around the corner, and it is always full of people. Next to this, in almost every restaurant on this street, you will be able to get some amazing tapas, in different styles.
9. Food Hall Galeria Canalejas
If you are a fan of big food halls, this is the place to be. Hidden underneath a fancy mall close to Sol Square, this is the perfect place where foodies can grab something from every stand and compare all their favorite cuisines.
10. Day trip to Toledo!
Toledo is one of the most beautiful cities in the world, and it is just around the corner! Take a bus (1h) or train (30 min) to this jewel of a city and spend your day mesmerizing within its high city walls. Because of Moorish (Islam), Christian, and Jewish influences, this city is also known as the City of the Three Cultures, and this is still visible in different parts of the city. For example, take a look at the stunning Cathedral, the beautiful Jewish neighborhood, and the Moorish-style houses! All these influences might remind you of Cordobá, or Granada!
